I have been getting a similar crash when ever I open the control panel.
Today microsoft exception handler indicated I should install a bug fix to
correct the problem but it now crashes in a new spot. Sure would be nice to
have my control panel back.

This is a crash in the Firebird Control Panel, isn't it? If you upgrade to
Firebird 2.0 or remove it, do you then stop crashing?
