Opening Attachments

I suddenly cannot open any attachments on my computer- e-mail or hard drive.
I simply get a message saying that Windows Installer is preparing to install
and then nothing happens. I have re-started several times, I have run my
virus scan program, and I reset my settings to an earlier date, yet the same
thing continues to happen. I greatly appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

Try to perform System Restore to when things were working fine or try this
command:
Open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need your XP CD handy.
Look in the Event Viewer for any error messages(X) and post then in your
next reply.

Thank you for the response! Unfortunately, I do have a my CD here with me.
Might there be any other solutions whereby I do not need to use my CD? Thanks
again.

For little info No, I don't know other solutions, do you get any error
message when you try to open an attachment or just silent nothing happen when
you click the link for the attachment ?.
Did you tried the System Restore by going to Start >> All programs >>
Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore.
Or the system file checker (SFC).

What's the format of the attachment? if the extension differs from what
you've expected, the sender puts some security to this attachment and you can
only open it if you have same "email security software" as the sender have.
