Open File - Security Warning on screenshots

L

Larry(LJL269)

Hi- everytime I take a screenshot with Infranview I get a popup
"Open File - Security Warning" "Do you want to open this file?"
....etc... See screenshot at
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/server/Posts/SecurityWarning.gif

Where exactly is the setting to get rid of this annoyance?

Google searches http://tinyurl.com/2keyuy & http://tinyurl.com/3cdb8l
were no help.

Last W Update on 3/15 & since then Regiistry work re Rec Window &
Rt-clk menus.

Your help is MUCH appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advice is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Disable Open File - Security Warning

<quote>
Run gpedit.msc, and go to Local Computer Policy->User
Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows
Components->Attachment Manager and enable "Default risk level for file
attachments", and then enable "Inclusion list for low risk file types"
and add to this list the file extensions that you want to open without
triggering this crap.

I have added .reg;.exe;.gif;.jpg;.avi;.mpeg so far.

I also use HijackThis' ADSSpy to locate files with Alternate Data Streams,
then I move them to my removable drive, which is FAT32, and move them back
to my hard drive. Since my removable drive is FAT32 it gets rid of the all
of the ADS. If files do not have the ADS info, you get no warnings.

I have no idea, Larry. I just installed XP Pro SP2 on a new machine three
weeks ago and I already have 75 !!$%#!!$%!!#$!!% Updates and I even declined
two. See Ayush's post with registry info.

Looks like it's part of SP2.

TY 4 digging all that out Wesley .

I didnt read it all but it does say 'The Attachment Manager in Windows
XP SP2 can help protect your computer from unsafe attachments that you
might receive with an e-mail message and from unsafe files that you
might save from the Internet' . These files r gif screenshots I
generated with infranview so I think this isn't applicable! Would u
agree?

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

I empathize with u. I find 25% r not applicable if I take the time to
read workaround, vulnerability details, ... but I'm ~25 behind in
'critical' updates so I didn't bother. My 2nd XP has none post SP2 &
gets a trojan every 3-4 yrs which is same frequency as 1st XP which I
update. But I have lots of other security on both like ActiveX blocks,
extensive use of secutity zones, WScript & VBS cant run, ... & I image
data every 3 days & OS every 2 -3 weeks keeping 2-3 images min on USB2
HDD.

Maybe I can ignore all but service packs!

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.

That just makes it so you get everything at one time. :)

Service Pack
Definition: A service pack is a tested, cumulative set of all hotfixes,
security updates, critical updates, and updates. Service packs may also
contain additional fixes for problems that are found internally since the
release of the product and a limited number of customer-requested design
changes or features.

Hi Ayush - Thx 4 Registry help. Wesley said the same thing & gave 2
URLs about Attachment Manager which has me confused since these files
r gif screenshots I generated with infranview & SP2 has been on my PC
since it was released but this problem is just days old.

In an attempt to not get ActiveX warnings for HTML files saved from
internet, I had checked 3 entries just to see what would happen in
Internet Options > Security > Local Intranet > Sites. I just unchecked
them, took a screenshot, & opened it without incident. Normally I
document changes to settings but this time I forgot.

So maybe it is fixed. I shall keep my fingers crossed 4 next few days
& I may do ur Registry changes later but I get very few attachments.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
