open file command in Excel 2003 causes program to stop responding

When trying to open a file within Excel 2003, directory window freezes, then
program stops responding and closes. Also, if open an Excel file from folder
outside of program, file opens, but if try to use save as command, program
freezes then closes. Both times get message that program is not responding
after slight delay.
