Excel 2002 not responding when attempt to close

All my Excel files appear to work properly, save properly (if I click 'save'
immediately). However, if I've left an EXCEL file open for a while EVERY TIME
I go to close it, it hangs, freezes, does not respond and I have to force
close it with Ctrl-Alt-Del. This is consistent. All software patches,
repairs, and updates are current and installed. It has been happening since
as long as I have used it, that I can remember. Any suggestions?

The problem is that it won't exit. It just freezes. Strange that save works
fine, usually. But it IS consistent, in that it always freezes when I go to
close or exit after it's been open for 30 minutes or so.....
