Opening an Excel 97 file in Excel 2003

I have a spreadsheet created in Excel 97 that will not open in Excel 2003. It
was my understanding that newer versions of Excel would open older version
files. The file is currently on my laptop which is running on Windows ME and
it works just fine. It will not, however, open on my desktop which has Excel
2003 and is running on Windows XP Professional. After clicking on the file,
the file starts to open and then freezes up the Excel program. The task
manager indicates that Excel is not running. Any ideas?

You assumption is correct XL2003 will open any previous version file. In
fact 97 will also open 2003 files.

Have you tried opening Excel and then going through File>Open... rather than
double-clicking the file

If this works, look in excel at the setting under
Tools>Options...>General>ignore other applications. It should be un-checked

Try searching for a file called *.xlb (it may be hidden so make sure you
search thes too), delete it and re-start Excel. Does that work?
