Most of the "older" games will run perfectly well on Windows XP. Some need
to use Compatibility Mode (details are in Help and Support), and this
TechNet article will help you:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/lgcyapps.mspx

Basically, what Compatibility Mode does is allow the older program to
"think" it is being installed on the operating system for which it was
designed. You also need to pay attention to the game's requirements, and
some need to be installed using Compatibility starting with the installation
itself by going to Start/Run/Browse and locating the install.exe or
setup.exe file on the root of the CD. You can right-click that file, follow
the pattern to use Compatibility Mode and have it install.

After the install, make sure to update the program from the web site of the
creator, then right-click the icon you'll use to launch the game and make
sure the proper Compatibility settings are ready. You also need to make
sure the proper display and color settings are selected.

I have a received a message saying I do not have enough extended memory when
trying to run my DOS-based game from 1994. I adjusted the extended and
expanded memory for "auto" on the memory tab under properties in the game's
executable file. I also adjusted the compatibility to Windows 95 and I am
still unable to get the game to run correctly.....any suggestions?

Oh, okay. I didn't realize this was a DOS-based game. Here's what my
fellow MVP Jimmy S. usually posts, so perhaps it will assist you:
=====
When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For sound
issues use: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound Good Luck! :)

There are lots of programs/systems to make old games run. I use
"VDMSound" to run old games (that fixes sound and other problems).
Also there are utilities to patch the code to prevent chrases for old
DOS-games. I researched this VERY deep when upgrading from 98 to XP,
and I was (finally) able to run 99.9% of my old games under XP.

The programs and I needed is only a couple of MB's all together.

Do you think you can post a link to these programs? I've managed to bring
the speed of this game to 1.5 times the normal game speed and restore the
game's music....but its still too slow to play.

keep in mind this is a 3d shooter designed to run on a pentium 1 proessor
and 190 Mhz. my processor is the latest Pentium and 2.0 Ghz.

....then theres the issue of the game not even recognizing my USB-connected
controller....

......*sigh*.....I'm about to give up and just go back to Morrowind......

Hi kwarlord,

For VDMSound the new link to the Sourceforge project is:

...what was that third option again? VMsound???

It emulates old school sound hardware and pipes it through DirectX. As the
programs themselves no longer have a way to communicate with the sound
hardware.
especially on a computer that was created five years AFTER Morrowind was
released. LOL

and as ambitious as Bethseda Softworks is, I wouldn't be surprised if
Oblivian will be the same way. ;-)

The trouble with Morrowind is it actually renders everything around you
rather then what you can actually see. Oblivion had better run better. :p

The joystick actually works in DosBox (its a christmas miracle! LOL), but is
there anyway to emulate a pentium 1 on this program? also, do I have to
mount the Hexen directory every time I want to play? I just want to click on
the icon on my XP desktop and just play.

(keep in mind, I tried every parameter in moslo and cant get it to run
properly.)

I don't know if I have the links to all the files. But I can ZIP them
and mail them to you (the most important take a couple of MB).
