OLD Mac computer: Browser and email apps needed

S

Susan Bugher

I've been asked about a browser for an OLD (~1990) computer running Mac 7.5

The current browser can't view some web sites. The email program
apparently needs updating too. . .

I know nothing. . . help!!! browsers? email clients? newsgroups? web
sites?

There wasn't a lot of freeware in the Mac world.

Browsers:

Internet Explorer 4.01
Netscape Navigator 4.08
Netscape Communicator 4.08
iCab 2.9 (the most modern)

E-mail:

Outlook Express 4.02 (the best free option IMO)
Netscape Communicator 4.08
Eudora Light 3.1.3

Outlook Express 4.5 (the best free option IMO)
Netscape Communicator 4.08
MT-Newswatcher 2.4.4

Thank you. The Low End Mac site looks quite promising. :) I will pass
your info along.

When I was using a Mac of similar vintage these were my apps of choice:

I-Cab browser, or Netscape stand-alone 4.8
Eudora Light 3.1
Newswatcher

Some links that have been around for years -
Resources for the older Macintosh http://w3.trib.com/~dwood/oldmac.shtml

Jags house of Mac
http://www.jagshouse.com/classicsoftware.html

Pure Mac
http://www.pure-mac.com/olden.html

I also recall finding somewhere a copy of IE version 2! It ran very well
on an old bw powerbook with 2 megs of ram.

How interesting ...
Some time ago I was given a Powerbook160 with piles of disks and stuff
and I'm quite tempted to resurrect it.

you might want to see if you can run Mac OS 9, as that will make it all
a little easier.
That's what I'm running on a PPC PowerMac 5500
The best browser I've found is Opera (v. 5 tho, NOT the most recent,
but more stable and still powerful). IE:mac is okay
I've found no reason not to use Outlook Express
MT NewsWatcher seems the best way to go, tho I'm not completely happy
with it.

The very very best resource I've turned up is MacOrchard - they compare
and review damn near everything and it's there to download too
(plus they have a plugin for Sherlock)

IIRC you can find IE version 2 on a Win95 CD. Not a Mac, but on an old
computer of the same year I found IE 4 to run just fine. It would pop-up the
warning about certain web-pages not displaying properly due to the scripts,
but other than that (sometimes annoyance) it displayed web-pages just fine
(even when the message popped up). On one, it wouldn't allow downloads
and/or installs from the Net... served as a firewall and a virus protector all
in one! LOL! One could install from a floppy or a CD, but not otherwise.
I still have that machine and it works fine...Win95!!!

Hi wyrwolf,

Thanks for the additional info. It's not my computer - I will pass the
info on. (I'm also saving all these good links for future reference.) :)
