OL97 calendar automatically accept meeting

Hello,

We have created mailboxes for conference rooms for scheduling the room reservations.
I have set the calendar options to automatically accept meeting requests, automaticlly decline conflicting messages and recurring meeting requests and automatically process requests and answers on arrival.

Yet it seems to me that the automation works only if the mailbox is open. That is: if I send a meeting request to this conference room it answers me and accepts the request, if the mailbox is open on any computer. But if the mailbox is closed, then it does not send a receipt and the meeting time remains free. When the mailbox is opened the meeting request is accepted in a little while.
Problem is that these mailboxes normally are not open. And yet we should be able to make reservations to the rooms calendar.
Is this really the normal way for a calendar to function, or am I missing something?

We use Outlook 97 and Exchange 5.5

Thank you for the information.

This is normal behavior. Outlook 2000 was the first version to allow direct
booking of conference rooms. See
