ntbackup does not execute XP-Pro SP2

XP-Pro SP2

I have tried re-installing from ntbackup.msi, but still no show.

I can see the ntbackup process in Task Manager, but the gui never appears.

I cannot start it from the command line, either.

Is there a corrupted or missing registry key?

I would try reinstalling from your XP installation disk, if you still have
it, instead of NTBackup.

Reinstalling the entire operating system is done using the installation CD
and a floppy drive.
If you don't have both of them, you are out of luck,

Confusing (At least I am)! You cannot re-install XP using "ntbackup.msi" -
it's function is to install the backup utility.
Evidently you did not use ntbackup to "backup" the computer in order to be
able to restore XP.

Also it appears the computer is functional ("... I can see the ntbackup
process in Task Manager....") - so - why are you re-installing XP?

I'm sorry, but you all seem to misunderstand.

XP appears to be working somewhat fine.

It is ntbackup.exe that is not working. I see it in the Task Manager, and
when I Debug the task, I see it stalled at an "int 3" instruction, indicating
it encountered some kind of exception.

I would like to be able to use ntbackup to create disaster recovery backup
on a separate disk.

The reason I want to do this that I want to use the XP install disk to
repair XP. The reasons for that are the errors I am seeing in event viewer.

1. LoadUserProfile errors in Event Viewer when booting. I had a couple of
users that I have deleted, and I fear that the deletions left some corruption
in the hive.

2. The Aministrator account is visible from Computer->Manage->"Local Users
and Groups"->Users, and there is a folder for Administrator in "Documents and
Settings", but the Administrator account does not appear on the Windows Logon
screen.

3. Occasionally, I see DNS and AVG update services leave timeout errors,
though they do restart on their own.

4. I have enjoyed several blue screens with stop code 19.

Basically, I have some hive corruption that I'd like to clean up with the
Restore facility on my XP disk.

HOWEVER, the Restore procedure described in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us STRONGLY suggests that you use
ntbackup to save the current hive in case the Repair goes awry, so you will
at least have something to recover from.

As annoying as the long bootup times are, and as disconcerting as the
somwhat rare blue screen is from time to time, I would like to be able to
stabilize the system if possible.
