XP Pro Backup Utility Problem

When I try to do a backup by clicking

Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Backup

I don't get the dialog boxes that the instructions show. Instead, my
computer restarts. I am using XP pro. and I downloaded the backup file
ntbackup.msi because it wasn't on my Windows disc from Dell. That didn't
work. I also downloaded and installed ntbackup-1.msi. Still, when I click
backup, my computer reboots. What am I doing wrong?

I would like to learn how to use this utility and back up to an external
hard drive. But so far, I cannot get it to work.

1.Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.Click the Advanced tab.
3.Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and
Recovery dialog box.
4.Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary
number of times.
5.Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Now when a crash occurs, the system does not reboot automatically, but
you'll see a blue screen with the error codes which helps to know the cause.
