ntbackup does not run

When I start ntbackup it loads as a process but never displays a dialogue box
(except on one occasions is showed a window that said "Backup Utility" which
was then "not responding." Ntbackup used to work. This new behavior arose
after I had installed Office 2007 which I have since deleted. In instead
reinstalled Office 2003 (SBE) - and now I have problems with Outlook (the
toolbars do not respond, and if I switch to Calendar view the toolbar does
not change, it stays the same as the one in Mail model).

I tried running "ntbackup /?" from both the "Run" box and from a DOS box
("cmd"). The programs does not respond.

- I reinstalled Win XP Pro- nothing.
- I "repaired" my XP Pro installation - nothing !
I examined the registry for ntbackup entries and compared by to that on a
second XP Pro machine, did see any obvious differences.
- The Shadow Volume Backup service is in "manual" mode.
- Finally, I also installed the ntbackup.msi that comes with XP home
(thinking some .dll is corrupt) - again, the problem remains.

Can anyone help ? I have a previous full backup made with ntbackup (30 days
ago) and now cannot access it - otherwise I would restore my entire
installation to before installing Office 2007. Are their any programs that
will read an ntbackup "backup file" so I restore my files ??

Hi Chip,

Before you start NTBackup, have you tried starting the service of Volume
Shadow Copy, even thou it is set to Manual?

As for cleaning the Windows Registry, have you tried using TuneUp Utilities
2006 located: http://www.tune-up.com/ ?

Thanks for your response. I actuall fixed the problem by deleting all files
(but not subfolders) in the folder

\system32\NtmsData

located in the Windows folder (WINNT on my machine, that is, in folder
WINNT\system32\NtmsData)

This folder holds NTbackup information about prior backups, volumes, etc. I
think one or more of these files were corrupt. When NTbackup started and it
got an internal error as it searched for volumes, etc. it just stopped
sending info to the user.
