ntbackup fails with delayed writed failed message

During a scheduled or non scheduled ntbackup from an windows XP SP1 client to
a Windows 2003 file server Share, the ntbackup does not complete. The
ntbackup will hang close to the end of the backup process. They will then
receive the "delayed write failed" message.
When I check the event log, it will have application event ID 8001 and 8019
errors for source ntbackup. The Task Scheduler Log shows the following
comment.
"Result: The task completed with an exit code of (1f)"
The backup log shows the following error: "The device reported an error on a
request to write data to media."

I can not open the .bkf file that ntbacup created.
The closest similar problem I found was in Microsoft Article ID : 321733.
But None of the effected computers have event id 50.
This is happening on 9 of our XP clients that backup to this server.
It seems to be an intermittent problem. Sometimes the backup runs fine,
while most times the backup fails.
Any ideas?

I looked in the event log under system and did find a few Event ID 50 errors.
The dword is different from what is mentioned in Microsoft Article ID: 321733.
I found Source: MRxSmb, Event ID: 50
{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
\Device\LanmanRedirector. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by
a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save
this file elsewhere.
Words:

0010: 00000000 c000020c 00000000 00000000
0020: 00000000 00000000 c000020c
I disabled SMB signing in the registry of the XP client but this did not help.
I created a share on a windows 2000 computer and send the backup to it from
one of the effected Windows XP clients.
The backup completed without the “delayed write failed†error. I checked the
event log, the backup log, the scheduler log and there wasn’t any errors. I
sent the backup 6 consecutive times without error.
I then created another share on the Windows 2003 server with full read and
write permission for everyone and configured the backup to go to this share.
I received the delayed write failed message on the very first time I ran a
backup to this share.

Can anyone help with this problem?

Jamie, I am having the same problem with 2 of my users with their new Dell
with XP Pro SP2 and MS support is not very helpful because they are talking
about word code c000022c and we have c000020c. Please post the fix if you
find one and I will do the same. Thanks!

Windows 2003 SP1 was installed on our file server and I set two machines to
backup to it again. Both backup jobs are running without any errors so far.
It has only been a few days. I will give it a week then move the rest of the
backups to this server again.

MS support emailed me a hotfix for my problem and I found out that my desktop
nic card speed and dup mode was not matching my Cisco switch. I set both ends
to 100/Full and its not giving errors when trying to save large docs after
editing on the network drives. So, I am sitting tight with my fingers crossed
and see what happens.
