Notepad vs Wordpad

Hello

I have an XP Pro machine. I've downloaded some cgi scripts. When I
doubleclick on them, they open as text files in notepad. However, the
contents is pure giberish.

If I open it in Wordpad, I can read the contents.

In the past I have been able to use notepad...I was just wondering if anyone
else has come across this before and how to get around it.

Right click one of your files, scroll to "open with", look for wordpad. If
not there, click "choose program"; if still not there, click "browse"; it
will be in the C:\program files\windowsNT\accessories folder. Make sure you
tick the box that says "Always use this program". Now wordpad will open your
files every time. Hope this helps.

Warning: I'm not a tekkie. However, I do use Notepad and
Wordpad. Only the verion of Wordpad I have for some reason
is called "Write." Once you open it, you'll see it's
Wordpad.

AT any rate, rather than "downloading a cgi script", which
MIGHT (don't know) be part of the problem. if you use
Microsoft software, that might solve your problem.

I recomend putting Wordpad in a folder called "Wordpad". I
then create a folder off my C:\ folder which I call
"Programs". In that folder, I put my small programs that
don't have to be installed in the registry.

The notepad program is found in the Windows directory. Just
go into the Windows directory, it's all listed
alphabetically. I find it's easiest to find the right
program in this directory by putting it in Icon view.

Go half-way down and you'll find the Notepad icon, which is
blue.

Drag it to your desktop (right click), make a shortcut of
it, and you can put your shortcut wherever you like.

I put mine in my Quick launch, because I use it a LOT. The
other writing program I have a shortcut of is Write.

I'm going to post a clean copy of word pad. For some reason,
it is packaged as "Write.exe", but once you open it, it's
Wordpad.

(Don't know where to send you on the web for it.)

Good luck!

You've got a lot more to learn, Tally. Do not post binaries in a
non-binary newsgroup. It's a big no-no.
