"Not Responding" messages

When I try to close a window of a program a second identical window opens, locks the computer and I get the error "Not Responding". I have to go control, alt, delete, and close program and then reopen the program. Sometimes I can go for several minutes, running the program and other times it does it the first time I try to go from one window to another. Any ideas?
