What you should do it remove Norton from your machine and never, ever,
put it back on. Same holds true for McAffee.

Don't you mean "McCrappy"?
McCrappys anti-spyware program is worse than not having one at all, it gives
the user a false sense of security when the realality is they don't.

Not a fan of any McAfee product, It's still funny to me that most folks
don't know how to pronounce it and call it Mac Caf-ey. It's like how
many pronounce Symantec as SemaTech. Interesting that the two top
(Market Share) products have names that are so mispronounced.

Norton hogs system resources.

Both Norton & MacAfee have poor Uninstallers. Despite uninstalling, they
leave behind hundreds of invalid registry entries & many folders/ files.

PS: I apologize about my poor English & remember am no MS support just a
newbie!

Check NAV's "Global" settings to see if Auto-protect is set to load at startup.
EXACT error message would be helpful.

Don't thing even the appropriate Symantec site or tech can help you unless
you cite the version of NAV, and what if any XP SPs you have installed.

Symantec are well aware of this.
Run Live Update, then restart the computer (regardless of whether the update
requires it).

If that fails Symatecs advice is to uninstall and reinstall.

Good Luck

Remvove/uninstall Anything nortons. Reboot. Then install fresh and see
if it works.

Seems a silly question but where did you learn the correct pronuciation of
the names? I always heard others pronounce McAfee as MAC-a-fee and Symantec
as si-MAN-tec or SI-man-tec but I have never seen or heard an officially
correct way to pronounce the names. I have heard Linus Torvalds'
pronunciation of Linux but hardly anyone I know says it correctly.

Who shall clear the invalid NAV registry entries before rebooting?
If you can do it manually well enough.
Other wise visit Symantec, according to your product type/ version, ask for
online or email support regarding complete removal.

From dealing with the company representatives of both McAfee &
Symantec. Actually McAfee took on Network Associates as their
official name - but I think they've re-adopted McAfee again. Actually,
because of my last name, McCarty it makes pronouncing McAfee
pretty instinctive. Growing up,my surname was mispronounced every
way you can image, McCarthy, McCartney, McCarthney......

I had a friend with the last name McElravy. Looks like Mc-EL-ravy but is
pronounced MAC-elravy by the family. MAC-carty would sound very awkward.
Network Associates is easier.

Installation after removal & rebooting can definitely occur.
But at times one can face issues while receiving automatic updates due to
invalid entries.
