Virus >> uninstalled N. AV 03 >> cannot install Nortons Av 2004

Please help....

One of my co-workers got hit by multiple viruses after his Nortons 2003 AV
was not installed properly.

He subsequently unistalled AV 03' and tried installing 04 Edition.

During the installation it conducted a 'light' scan and picked up some
viruses like Beagle.

Upon 33% completion of scan he got an !Error message saying unable to
install due to the following file:

'c:\docum~1\mike\LOCAL\~1\TEMP\pft10D.tmp\dcSetup.exe'/install

Can anyone tell me what is going on here ...is there any way to get Nortons
04 up and running on his machine...he has repeatedly tried unsalling 04 and
reinstalling...

Thanks

Tell him to return NAV 2004 back to where he purchased it from. If
the store won't take it back, return it to Symantec. They have a 30
day money back guarantee on all their software. Why? Because NAV
2004 is sub-standard at best. It includes a defective activation
scheme that does not work very well.

Tell him to either re-install his NAV 2003 correctly or download one
of the several good free AV packages: AVG, or AVAST

Actually, no matter what any of us thinks of NAV (not highly on my
part), your friend won't be able to install a full-featured antivirus
until he gets his computer cleaned up. Here's the way to do it:

1) Take the infected machine off the Internet and any lan immediately.
2) From a different, clean machine download Stinger
(http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/) and run it in Safe Mode. Stinger is a
limited virus checker, but its advantage is that it is standalone and
doesn't need to be installed.
3) Hope that Stinger cleans up the machine enough to be able to
reinstall your av or install a new, current one. Update its definitions
and do a full scan.
4) Continue the cleaning process by removing any spyware with Spybot
Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(http://www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so run them both
since they complement each other. You may also want to run CWShredder
and HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm. Although CWShredder
is no longer being updated, it will still clean older variants of the
CoolWebSearch malware. Be sure to update these programs before running
them. Always read the instructions before running a spyware removal
tool. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe
Mode.
5) After you've installed your full-featured av, updated its definitions
and run a full system scan.
6) Make sure you are running a firewall.
7) Go to Windows Update and apply all security patches for your
operating system. Do not install drivers from Windows Update.

Have him download stinger, a downloadable AV program from McAfee. It
checks for about 45 viruses. That might get his system up enough to run
some online scans then use the RNAV2003 tool from Symantec to make sure
NAV2003 is removed and try reinstalling again. He needs to make sure a
firewall is running before he goes online.

Download Stinger (free) from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and use it
to clean the more common of the current crop of viruses from the
machine. Then go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and use the free
online virus scan to finish the cleanup job.

Next go to Symantecs web site and locate their RNAV2003 utility and
use it to clean up the remnants of the old Norton 2003 install from
the machine. Then try installing Norton 2004 again and if it still
doesn't work return it.

Good luck
