Norton Internet Security 2006 Activex controls problem

I've spent the last 3 nights chatting with Symantec about this and they have
now washed their hand of the problem! I wonter if anyone has any ideas?
I used to have NIS 2005 but the liveupdate stopped working. I removed it
and it wouldnt reinstall. I then bought NIS 2006 and that wont install
either. If i try and run Autofix or do a virus scan from the Symantec site i
get prompted to install Activex controls, which i accept, and they APPEAR to
install. The process then fails with " Cant run Activex controls". I've
done this many times always with the same result so i assume the Activex
controlls arent actually being installed.
I have my IE settings set to allow running - as per Symantecs advice.
I have manually deleted all Symantec folders and reg entries.
I have run MSI fix - and installed the latest Windows Installer
I have IE scripting enabled
I have even tried SAFE mode and a "Clean Boot" (so no Firewall started)
I must have spent at least 10 hrs on this and I've pulled all my hair out !
Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved before the PC is thrown out of
the Window! I have a suspicion that all was OK before SP2 was installed ...

SP2 is not at fault. NIS has a long history of issues with updates, upgrades
and subscription renewals. My best advice would be to remove NIS and
use alternate (even free) alternatives. However, in your case you've got a
system with pieces of Symantec that need removing. To truly get Symantec
off a PC is time consuming/detailed process. You have to:
1.) Remove core applications ( 100% of all Symantec/Norton)
2.) Uninstall LiveUpdate & LiveReg
3.) Search and remove the Symantec folders from the PC
4.) Uninstall the Sym... entries from Non-Plug & Play category
5.) Manually remove the volumes of "Orphaned" Registry Keys left
behind. ( done carefully and with backup/image taken first)
I would switch to Zone Alarm Free for Firewall and either eTrust ( fee ) or
AVG/Avast free AV. Once Symantec free, the PC will actually run better.

Never a good idea to update anything because an earlier version was giving a
problem, unless you know specifically that an update will cure the problem.
There is info on symantec site for manual removal, you need to follow this
for both NIS2005 and 2006.
You might also need to run windows installer clean up utility

I think i'm now an expert in NIS removal - i've done it that many times !
I've also run the Windows Installer cleanup utility. I was determined to get
this all working - tho after all the time spent I think the best thing will
be to go the Freebie route and throw Norton in the bin ! Mind you i had very
similar problems with McAfee on another machine and had to admit defeat with
that too.
Cheers

Hi for whats it worth I had a similar problem taking out NIS2003, left
rubbish in, could not put in 2006 and it left Word & Excell
non-working as it was still trying to do a virus check.

I was given two tools from the Symantic site -, RnisUPG.exe and
Rnas2003.exe which clened up the PC and left everyting ok and allowed
2006 to go in. I assume there is a a similar Rnis for 2005.

Yes - they have an equivelent - but they didnt help either. I've decided to
cut my loses and have loaded AVG, Avast and zonealarm. I'll put it down to
experiance i guess. Thanks anyway.
