Norton Internet Security 2006 - permanently disabled?

Greetings,

Norton Internet Security 2006 (hereafter NIS) installs cleanly, but
will never finalize setup, and the icon in the system tray is always
disabled (and, obviously, can't be re-enabled). Attempting to launch
the program from desktop, folder, or command-line has no effect. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times. I've gone to
Symantec's site to use their NIS 2006 "fix tool" w/ no apparent effect.
I've used Symantec's uninstall tool (which is supposed to remove all
traces of any Symantec product from your machine) but that didn't seem
to fix anything either.

The machine is spy / ad / mal / greyware clean, and there are no
viruses present (I thought, originally, some malicious process was
disabling it). While researching on the net, I've read reports from a
handful of other people who have had this same problem, but I've yet to
see any possible "fix" for it -- hence the reason for this post.

So... does anyone out there have any ideas / suggestions / comments?
(For the record, this isn't my machine, and I would never suggest this
product to anyone).

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for acknowledging that it's not a good choice. You'll avoid
a few Symantec bashing posts that way. It's a royal pain trying to
overcome the installation pit-falls and get the damn program up &
running. Here's a few tips I've learned while messing around this
overpriced/resource hog piece of junk software.
1.) Uninstall base Application with "Change" in Add/Remove
2.) Reboot
3.) Uninstall:
Symantec Security Center
Live Update
Live Reg
4.) Reboot
5.) Full system search for keyword "Symantec" - delete all folders
found, likely 2 or more
6.) "Dangerous part" - Download RegSeeker, use it's search facility
to located two keywords "Symant" and "Norto". Delete all
registry keys that are found. Some Class Identifiers will become
orphaned, but manually removing would take days.
7. Add System Environment
Variable DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
Set it's value = 1
8. Device Manager, Click View - tic/Check "Show Hidden Devices"
9. Expand Non-Plug & Play category. Look for entries starting with
the character Sym____. They should be shown in diminished tone
or grayed out. Right click each one and choose uninstall
10. Take a system image if you have that capability.
11. Rerun the Symantec removal Tools which helps clean out some of
the orphaned CLSIDs.
12. Check Registry, HKLM, System, CurrentControlSet, Services.
Look through the alphabetical listing for SymEvnt and ccApp if
found set Start mode = 4 or just delete them. (Export 1st)

-Good Luck, Aspirin helps when doing this process.

Im a newbie here but probably not the forum for this question. I have had
similiar nightmares with this product for XP. You can never get it completely
off your system. Like MS, they spend more R&D on product activation features
do they on customer service. I purchased and activated NIS in Dec 05 and by
June 06 my year was disabled by something and antivirus was inop. Symantecs
answer was $30 an incident, thats the extent of their customer support. The
clerk who works the phone wasnt in the least bit interested something out
there could render their product useless. I was a Norton user for over a
decade but no more. Good luck. You do have something on your system. And as
far as MS is concerned, put a slick face on a pathetic OS. 150,000 spyware
and worms is ridiculous. No amount of patches will ever make this product
safe. Im having nightmares trying to get mine running again. Five products to
keep the OS "secure" and stuff still gets in and does manages behind the
scenes. Then I read in here today that MS themselves are playing the spyware
game with the "true legit" registration download they say we "agreed" to
allow on our systems. God help us all.

McCarty: sounds like fun. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give it a
shot.
