Norton GoBack failed, now WIN XP PRO will not boot

I had Norton Systemworks installed (will NEVER use NORTON again!) and it's
AUTOPROTECT function failed. Norton said to use their "FIX" tool, which
failed. Norton then said to remove Systemworks with their "REMOVAL" tool.
However, there was a problem they did NOT address, which seemed to be that
GoBack became corrupted. Then Norton said to disable GoBack.

Since doing that, my WINDOWS XP PRO SP 2 refuses to boot.

What happens: the computer starts up, begins to boot, the Windows XP screen
appears, then suddenly a blue error message flashes (too fast for me to read)
and the computer reboots. It continues this cycle. Even attempting a SAFE
MODE will not help; the computer gets to a certain point, then goes into the
re-boot cycle again.

I ran the 'fixmbr' tool at the request of Norton, but it did not correct the
problem.

Norton then washed their hands of it, even though the entire problem started
with the failure of their AUTOPROTECT software, the failure of their "fix"
tool, the failure of their "removal" tool, and the failure of their GoBack
software.

Does anyone have any solution to how to get my computer to boot?

Press F8 when the computer starts and disable Auto Reboot and see if you
can get a bugcheck error message to work with.

He said he couldn't get to Safe Mode.

Try doing a Repair install of XP; second "R" option after you get the XP CD
booted. In theory you won't lose any data that way, but ... update your
backups anyway, especially since the OS is already borked.
I'm not sure whether there's a way to get to Safe Mode from the CD or
not; probably not. Are you SURE you can't get to the menu for Safe Mode?
Maybe you just didn't tap F8 quite right.

Boot from a CD; use the XP CD if you have to. Start a Command Prompt or use
the Recovery Console to get at things. Assuming you know what to do there
<g>.

Or, byte the big bit and reinstall; I know that sucks. If it gets to that
point, consider this a great reason for doing backups and even better for
having an imaging program: Then you could fix it by simply restoring the
drive to a recent image of itself. It's a powerful arguement; couple of key
clicks, some time, and voila, it all works again.
