Norton GoBack detects "multiboot disk" in Windows XP?

G

Guest

When I loaded Norton SystemWorks to my Windows XP system, it informed me that
it detected a multiboot disk and could not install the GoBack option. I
wasn't aware that my HP Pavilion computer had a multiboot disk. What is it,
do I need it, and what needs to be done to load GoBack?

Thanks!

Why do you need Goback? Windows XP contains System Restore!

In my opinion, there is no comparison. System Restore only restores Windows
system files and no very reliably at that. GoBack will restore the whole
drive or any file of folder on it. I'll take GoBack any day.

It sound like you might have an HP with the hidden recovery partition. Is
that the case? If so, GoBack isn't compatible with modified MBR's.

It may be because of HP's hidden restore partition. You would need to
check with either Symantec and/or HP tech support to see if there are
any workarounds.

The retort to that is that many won't have a Norton product on their
computer at any cost but may be that debate is for another day!

That's fine but the guy ask a question about GoBack which he was trying to
get working. I didn't see him ask for opinions on whether he should use it
or System Restore. It looks more like Norton bashing looking for an
opportunity to pounce (again).

Then why don't you provide him with the relevant link
in the Symantec Knowledge Base?

As if it is likely to be that easy!

Which of the 25,580 plus answers do you post using this query?
"could not install goback"

So what's your point? I don't care to debate Symantec with you. You
obviously don't care for it and I am satisfied with it. Why do you insist
on forcing your opinion on everyone? Move on to what ever product you like
and let others do the same.

This is usenet. You get what you pay for. If you or the OP doesn't
want to see/here the opinions then don't read the messages. Voicing an
opinion about Goback is certainly appropriate if the problem is with
goback.

D

Dave

Yes, it's usenet. So I guess we can express our opinions just like
everyone else. Or does the Norton bashers opinions count more? The
bashers seem to have this grudge and go around looking for opportunities to
pounce. Frankly I think some counseling is in order.

Everytime I try to email HP tech support from my computer's "Help and
support" window, the message never gets sent to HP; even though the help
window indicates that messages will be sent as soon as a connection is made
to my internet server. And I hate to call their toll free numbers and try to
speak with an out-sourced tech support person in India or China or wherever
the lowest overseas service bidders presently reside. Whenever I've
contacted support people in the past, whether it was for HP, Microsoft, SBC
DSL, or whatever company, I felt that 99% of the time I was being given a
universal canned answer and inferior customer service. I usually give up and
attempt to search the WEB to find people who may have had similar problems
and can provide useful suggestions.

Thanks!

I think I ask this before but do you have an HP that has the hidden recovery
partition on the hard drive?

The answer is that GoBack apparently isn't compatible with an altered
MBR such as is used on OEM machines with a Restore function, like HP's
and Dells. The only way to get an authoritative workaround/answer would
be to contact the OEM (HP in your case). Otherwise, use something like
Acronis TrueImage (or even Norton Ghost) to regularly image your drive.

I believe HP machines the ability to boot to a Restore partition on the
harddrive. So that might be what GoBack is detecting. You'd have to
give HP a call to make certain though.

I think GoBack is an EXCELLENT program. It is my first line of defense.
But I also keep 3 versions of DriveImage 7.0 on my 80GB USB hard drive for
further backup.

If you can detect the multiboot option, disable it, load GoBack, then you
can reactivate your option if you wish. There are too many variables to
answer how to do that. You'll have to read your HP help files or contact
HP.

It's good to have confidence in the products you use. I happen to be
satisfied with System Restore, albeit I think I have only needed to use
it once in 3 years.

We agree to disagree then. My experience with System Restore is that it
seldom worked when I needed it. I have never had GoBack fail for me. And
it'll do a lot more than System Restore.
