Norton Ghost help?

I posted a message to the Symantec newsgroup, but it doesn't seem like it's
very active, so I hope people don't mind I post here as well.

I just installed Ghost 9.0 and tried to make my first backup image.
The process completed and came back with "Error E7D1001E: unable to read
file" and "Error 00000017: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) 0xE7D1001E."
Neither of these errors are in the manual or in Symantec's knowledge base.
I checked my backup drive and a Ghost image file was present.
So I hit back and it started creating the drive image again. I tried to
cancel but the percentage kept going up so I let it run.
Next time I checked the backup drive, there are *no* files (hidden or
otherwise) but space *is*
used up - more space than my original uncompressed drive data takes up!

What is going on??

Thanks. I'm not using a tape backup but maybe the hard drive I'm trying to
write to is bad.

I got a slightly different message (but with same non-results)

Error 00000017. Data error (cyclic redundancy check) (0xE7C300f).

In addition, every time I go to "live update", it wants to download the
same 3 megs of data and have you restart your computer each time wih no
effect.

Hi Dave,

I ran into the same problem about six months or so ago. I had
totally uninstall Norton Antivirus (there is an uninstaller program
on the Symantec web site), including having to edit the registry.
Once I had the application uninstalled I reinstalled it, and it has
worked fine since.

In my case the problem occurred because I had interrupted an
automatic update. I now make sure to wait for the little window to
pop up telling me that the auto-update is completed.

Ciao . . . C.Joseph

OK gang, finally fixed it. There are 2 steps to be done:

I'll get right to the point:

1. You MUST run CHKDSK /F before trying to made an image- one bad file
and the program gives you a message that you have a cyclic redunancy
check error.

2. Running live update, YOU MUST NOT REBOOT when asked to do so!!!!
From the words of Norton tech support:

"After performing LiveUpdate you will receive a prompt that will ask
you to restart the computer. If you respond "YES" to rebooting the
computer it shuts down before the installation is complete. I recommend
that you please respond "NO" and allow Live Update to complete.
Then restart the computer after the patch is completely installed."
