Drive Image 7.0 / Norton Ghost 9.0

Mary

I have been running this Drive Image 7.0 since 2003 with no problems that I
know of. I have not had to use the backup feature so far. I do have the
SP2 /Win XP Home installed. The only thing that I am unhappy with in this
program is when you backup your HD to DVD's, you can't reuse those DVD's for
an updated HD again ( even though they are the RW type). It is just a one
time use DVD for backups. And it is soooo slow to backup on DVD's.

Now I did do a google search on Norton Ghost 9.0 to see if updating to that
one would be a good thing to do since Drive Image 7.0 is no more since
Symantec bought them out. The search produced a lot of negativity on this
product though.

Anyone know if a lot of these Norton Ghost 9.0 problems have been solved
before I purchase it.

Thanks
Mary

Hi,

I use Ghost 2003 for cloning my hard drive to a second hard drive. I now
have two, either one is bootable.

Why back up to CDs when you can clone and actually get a duplicate drive?

Hi Mary,

There is nothing wrong with Drive Image 7, it is a great program, and for
what you want to do backing up to dvd's I doubt Ghost would serve you any
better.
Your pretty much limited to it having to go through the dvd burning process.

You may want to consider - this is what I did, and I have Drive Image 7 - is
to purchase an external usb 2.0 hard drive. I have an 80 gb one, and I image
my system to it on a weekly basis - every Sunday night while I am asleep
like clockwork. I can store the usb hard drive away in a place for
safekeeping during the rest of the week.
Should something happen, I know I will not lose more than a week's worth of
changes/data. To me, well worth the price of the hard drive - and, I am
sure they have come down since I got mine.

And, imaging to the hard drive goes pretty quickly. DI7 does mine, in the XP
interface, in probably 30 minutes or so.

I don't know, but imagine Symantec probably will be expanding on the Drive
Image program, rather than the Ghost program, whatever they may end up
calling it.

Thanks. I do have two 100 gb HD's in my computer but thought it was a good
idea to use the DVD's too for backup. I backup my system every night to the
other HD in my computer.. As far as the DVD backup haven't done that in
over six months so really I should just give that up. The USB 2 external hd
is a good idea though.

BTW, I see nothing on Symantec's website that they even acknowledge this
Drive Image 7.0. When I called their support person and asked about the
Drive Image 7.0, he had no clue as to what I was talking about.

Drive Image was made by Powerquest.

Symantic purchased Powerquest earlier this year.

Sounds like someone at Symantec is either playing dumb, or is not aware.

Personally, I am not wild about Symantec's products. I was dissapointed when
I saw they gobbled up Powerquest.
Hopefully, they won't screw the technology up too much.

Mary,
I'd HIGHLY recommend trying a program called Acronis True Image. It can
do everything you want to do, very very easily, all through an intuitive
Windows interface. It's almost impossible to wade through the
Symantec/Norton Ghost garbage when looking for a cloning/backup program, but
this one is definitely worth your time. I definitely don't work for
Acronis, I'm just a very happy customer who's happy to spread the word about
a great product that is swamped by Symatec's marketing muscle.

Thanks, I may look into the Acronis True Image. I do remember sometime ago
that it got some great reviews. I did finally find an update for Drive
Image on Symatec's website. They sure did not make it easy to find.

Oh well, will see how it goes meanwhile.

Thanks

Does Acronis True Image Boot CD enable restoring from external
FireWire and USB/USB2 hard drives as does Ghost (?

Mary,

Ahh thanks for that one. Unfortunately that is only an update to 7.03 and
they did a 7.04 update. Further, it doesn't produce an ISO and what worries
me is that you have updated to 7.03, done a backup using it and then the
next day your hard drive dies. So, you buy another, put it in and restore
from the backup. Will it work? Your last ISO is either V7.0 or V7.01 more
than likely. Will they restore an image done by 7.03?

Where is the 7.04 update?

Thanks

Frankly, I am really confused now. It looks like I am getting a backup of
the c drive everyday. How do I know if it will restore or not until one
hard drive dies?

Yes... TI is a great product. Months ago we took Ghost, Drive Image and TI
and tested them all. TI came out as the clear leader and was most
compatible with all types of hardware. I personally use it with an
external USB 2.0 hard drive and it works great!

Excerpt from old posting... Drive Image 7 appears to be having a number
challenges. CNET approval is only 25% and the latest PC Magazine review only
gave it 3 out of 5. Ghost 2003 has a CNET approval rating of 52%, but has
moved past Drive Image in the latest PC Magazine review with a rating of 4
out of 5. One concern in reading the reviews was the number of people having
trouble getting it to work with externals. Acronis True Image has a CNET
approval of 65% and was one of the only to receive CNET editors choice. The
latest issue of PC Magazine rated it 5 out of 5 and gave it PC magazines
editors choice. You can get a 15 day trial version.

If you have a spare hard drive, restore the image to it and try to boot off
it. That's the best way.

No spare hard drive, but I can restore programs, pictures, etc. so
apparently it all works.
