Norton AV won't initiate scan

D

Diarmud387

We have Norton AV Program 9.0.0.338 with all the updates. We are using
windows XP. When we try a scan, a little box show up with a small icon
of a hard drive and the work "static". When we try windows Tak
Manager, we get "Not responding".

We've uninstalled and reinstalled it twice.

Any suggestions woudl be most appreciated. Thanks,
Dermott

Did you or are you paying for the Norton AV? If not, get rid of it, and go to:
AVG (Anti-virus) free for home PC

In side by side testing, AVG is not as reliable a detector of viruses as
is Norton or Symantec. I've seen systems at new clients running AVG and
Norton, where Norton picked up things that AVG didn't, but not the other
way around.

Nortons AV works fine when it works fine. It it doesn't work fine on
YOUR pc, use another anti-virus app.

Norton, updated, is better at detecting new viruses when compared to
others. If you're a cluebie newbie with aol and likely to find/acquire
the latest in new viruses, then norton AV is a good choice.

I disagree about the "New viruses" as I just had a case where our mail
server let in (to a trap) a Zip file with the latest Trojan. The normal
update process runs every 4 hours on our servers, every 1 hour on the
email servers. While Symantec had already detected it, their normal
update pulls did not contain the definition - the Priority update
contained it, but it was not until about 8PM EST that the normal update
pulls got the latest definition and detected it - even a manual live
update did not pull the update.

The definition files may be up to a week old if doing a manual download of
virus definitions for NAV. If that's what you mean by manual liveupdate.
If you mean you activated liveupdate via the NAV menu, excuse my reply.

For the last ten years much of my time is spent IDing and removing
viruses/trojans that have yet to be ID'd in ANY anti-whatever program. I
get to deal with the new stuff. As any other geek can attest, when you
get the feel for what files are suppossed to be running and what files
are not, it's not that hard to kill the newest nasties.

Back on topic, if you can't get Norton to do a scan, that can be a sign of
a trojan on your machine. I have seen some baddies that cause Norton to
just end prematurely, making the user think it did its thing when it did
not.

Double check your machine w/ the usual tools, from Safe Mode.
