apparently only NAV2004 and later are being supported with the WMI update
that is required to enable interopability with the Windows Security Centre.
if you have NAV2003 or earlier, as many people still do, you should contact
http://symantec.com directly, phone them up, and ask them what's going on,
why they are not providing the WMI update for NAV2k3.

if you are using NAV2004, then you simply run LiveUpdate, run once, then
repeat a second time, to get the WMI update. the first time you run
LiveUpdate, there will be updates to the NAV program itself.
download/install those and QUIT from liveupdate. then lauch liveupdate
again, you will then see the WMI update. note - the first time you run LU,
after installing the NAV program update, LU will popup a message to
re-launch it again, but there appears to be a LU bug on some systems that
causes this popup window to not gain focus so it will be hidden behind the
main LU window. look for the notification on the taskbar to bring it into
focus, press OK button, then Finish on the main LU dialogue. then rerun LU
a second time to get the WMI update.

note - the WMI update is only required for interopability with the WSC, but
with or without it, NAV still protects your system against virii.

The answer from Symantec:

Your Norton security products contain tamper protection features that
prevent malicious code from determining their status. This tamper
protection
also prevents the Windows Security Center from determining the status of
your
Norton security products. Shortly after Microsoft releases Service Pack 2,
Symantec will make a correction available through LiveUpdate. This
correction
will allow the Windows Security Center to correctly identify the status of
your Norton security products.

yes, we're aware of that... the WMI update is the component that is required
to enable the WSC to interoperate with NAV. that update is already
available for NAV2004 via LiveUpdate, and included with NAV2005. it is not
available for NAV2003 or earlier.

turn off the security center in xp that bugs you about it.
problem solved.

well, yeah... that takes care of the problem, out of sight, out of mind, and
it's not like the system actually needs the WSC (or the symantec WMI
update), but it's one of those pesky things that bugs you until it's fixed.

you make a good point though... the WSC is not required, system resources
could probably be better spent on useful programs, ones that you actually
use to get work/play done.

You must run Norton LiveUpdate after the installation of SP2. This has been
posted on the symantec website for at least 2 weeks.

Hello Francis:

Yes, you're correct. Only NAV 2004 and later versions are being
patched. It's obvious Symantec doesn't care about supporting older
versions or for that matter, providing any kind of good customer
support to its users. I'm advising as many friends and co-workers as
I can to not continue purchasing Symantec software. When my current
subscription for virus signatures has expired, I will switch to AVAST
which I believe is a good product. It's also free.

I find that interesting since I have NAV 2003, did the live update BEFORE
installing SP2 as instructed on the Symantec website, and the Security
Center integrates with NAV 2003 perfectly.

perhaps symantec has pulled the WMI update from LiveUpdate, it's not
available now.

the issue has nothing to do with whether the WMI update is installed before
or after SP2, you've misinterpreted what is stated on the symantec website,
as you can see from the following link, the WMI update can be applied
post-SP2

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...613?OpenDocument&tpre=&csm=no&src=con_web_nam

in my case, LiveUpdate was run several times *before* applying SP2, the WMI
update was not offered, pre or post SP2.

I find your post interesting.... Since I too did the live update on
both of my machines running NAV 2003 prior to installing SP2 and the
Security Control Panel still complains. Don't know what you
downloaded, maybe you got lucky. Anyway, according to Symantec the
only update WMI patch they've released is for NAV 2004.

In case you don't know it, if you have auto updates turned on in NAV
2003, NIS 2003, or NSW 2003, live update is automatically run every
day right after bootup.

FYI
Neowin http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=202998 has a copy of
the WMI update that someone with NAV2004 managed to snag from the temp
directory just before LiveUpdate completed updating NAV2004.

the WMI update can be downloaded from here:
http://www.neowin.net/staff/RadishTM/Norton_WMI_Update.rar

extract the files into a temp directory and run SYMWMI04.MSI to install the
WMI update. it actually does install and work fine with NAV2003 and the
WSC. i tested it before wiping my system and doing a clean install of SP2.
however, since doing the clean install, i thought i would wait for symantec
to officially release the WMI update for NAV2003 clients, but that hasn't
happened, so i'll probably go ahead and re-install this snagged version
within the next few days if symantec doesn't make it available via LU. as i
said, it does work, but i was hoping symantec would make it available via
LU.

no worries, you may also want to get the latest LiveUpdate too. i think
it's required too.

liveupdate:

download LU:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/lusetup.exe

received this from symantec today

notice it says NAV2003 WMI update will be released shortly

perhaps Symantec is delaying the release of the WMI update for NAV2k3 and
earlier in anticipation that many of their customers will panic - and
purchase a NAV2k4/5 upgrade - fooled into thinking that their systems are
not protected (because of the WSC warning)

Tell him never mind the hem.... (obviously he thinks you're female)

Bowing down three times with face to the floor will do just fine. <g>

Seriously, are you a major stockholder at Symantec Francis? You seem
to be able to get through where no one else succeeds. I'm glad you
did though, sure saved me some aggravation!

Regards.

i have nothing to do with symantec, but i repeatedly sent them a message,
via their online feedback form... i figured they'd eventually have to stop
ignoring me.

like i said, i'm sure the delay of the WMI update for Norton 2003 products
is Symantec's way of 'encouraging' its customers to upgrade to the latest
version of their products.
