Norton Anti-Virus

I swore that I'd never use the automatic registry fixer but I did years
ago and never had a problem with it - never at all until I started using
Photoshop. Not too bad of a track record for this software, IMO


Correction - it's "Power Utilities" version 6, not "System Suite". After
installing the software, there were, of course, virus definition file
updates. After a month or so, there was a malware update, virus def
update, and product update available the same day. After installing all
of them, my internet connection was hosed. I restored my system and then
installed each update individually in order to isolate which one it was.
It was the "product update". I contacted tech support via email and
within two days they returned my message with instructions to uninstall
the software and then install a different version I downloaded from
V-Com's site for which they provided the link.

Is Power Utilities a separate program or the new name for Power Desk?

not "Power Utilites". Fix-it is the same as System Suite but with less
features. It has all the features I need so there is no need for me to
spend extra for System Suite. Power Desk is still around as version 5, no

I think I had the same problem as yours. But, the problem went away a long
time ago.

When did your problem start? After what event did your problem start?
Which version of NAV are you using? Are you using the NAV that came with
NIS 2004? (NIS is Norton Internet Security.)

In my case, the problem started immediately after I applied SP2 to Windows
XP. If I remember correctly, the problem went away after I updated the
entire NIS. (The problem happened and vanished a year ago. So, I cannot
guarantee that I remember correctly regarding how the problem vanished.)
Updating only the virus definition would not remove the problem. The
program engines of NIS need to be updated.

One or two weeks after the release of SP2, Symantec released an updater to
evade the conflict between SP2 and NAV/NIS 2004. I guess the warnings you
got came from the Windows Security Center. The Security Center is a new
feature introduced by SP2.

By now, you may have updated your copy of NAV/NIS and your problem may be
gone. So, you may be no longer reading this thread.

By the way, for those who have an extra PC that is isolated from the
Internet and is in a low-risk environment and who are still annoyed by the
Windows Security Center on that safe PC, here is a link to a web page
explaining how to turn off Windows Security Center.
