What or which kind of Anti-Virus, preferrably 'free.' I need only
'simple/basis' form of Anti-Virus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"basic" you mean?

Avira AntiVir (Free) or eSet NOD32 (antivirus only - for a cost of about
$60/2yr license.)

Good. It's among the poorest AVs as far as I'm concerned.

For an anti-virus program, I recommend eSet NOD32, if you are willing
to pay for it. If you want a free anti-virus, I recommend one (only
one; never install more than one) of the following three:

Avira
Avast
Microsoft Security Essentials

You also need anti-spyware software. I recommend that you download and
install (both freeware) MalwareBytes AntiMalware *and*
SuperAntiSpyware.

If you are going to uninstall Norton, be sure to download and run their
removal tool for your product:
http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Then(as others have suggested) you can download and install MSE(Microsoft
Security Essentials):

Agreed! I used to do tech support and we found that Norton rarely got
removed cleanly and completely with a normal uninstall; you almost always
had to run the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of all of the bits and pieces
of Norton.

I'm not endorsing THIS suggestion since I've never used or even heard much
about Microsoft Security Essentials.

Quite honesty, I don't remember asking you to endorse my suggestions;)
Since you don't even have your Windows XP updated to the latest Service Pack
I would think that security enhancements are not high on your priority list
anyway.

If you've never heard of MSE and you want to bone up on it, I've provided a
few links to get your started.

I like Avira Antivir and Avast! Antivirus. Both have free versions.

If the OP has an oldish device like this laptop I'm using, she may find that
MSE slows it considerably. I tried it and soon changed back to Avast; but
it works fine on a more recent model.

MSE doesn't play well with my email program, Pegasus. No problem with
Avast.

There are several free anti-virus applications available, almost
all of which are superior to Norton. Here are two:

AVAST! Home Edition

Microsoft Security Essentials

Does Avira support "update from folder" for a PC not connected to the
internet? can the updates be downloaded apart?

Visit the Avira website and ask, HoopleHead.

From my personal experiences, it depends what make/system etc you have.
I have a custom built Pentium P4 3.8 GHz CPU with WIN HOME XP SP3.

I have only ever used free AV - Avira - Avast - IP/ISP's in-house security
suite.

Currently using Microsoft Security Essentials, which runs just fine - a bit
faster than the others. This was after I had removed Avast - MSE found two
minor 'nasties' on its first run.
I also have an Acer Extensa 5620z laptop, WIN PRO XP SP3, with only a 60GB
HDD.
It did have McAfee which I immediately uninstalled[with some difficulty]
I put Avast on which for some reason behaved like McAfee - very sluggish.
Now running MSE plus their firewall. So far no problems.
Does a full scan in no time at all.

Both have additional 'as and when' scanners - Malwarebytes and SAS plus
Spyware Blaster.
Once a year[during the summer] I do a full online scan with Symantec and go
off and play a game of cricket[just joking]
