non responsive program

For the past few weeks I've been having trouble using
Internet Explore 6.0. Orginally, I thought it was my ISP
so I went through their tech support several times and
got a new modem. Presently, I am still incurring
problems. The Internet simply stops responding,
generally it happens pretty fast after opening Explorer.
I've rebooted my pc and the modem, I have virus
protection, a firewall, and program to remove
solicitations. My ISP tech support doesn't know, and my
pc support doesn't either. I don't know what else to
do. Anybody ever have this problem?

I'm a regional engineer for a high speed ISP and I believe
I'm seeing the same problems with several of my customers
that you may be experiencing. However, I don't have a
solution. I'm hoping Microsoft can provide that. I can
let you know what I've found and maybe you can either
concur or add some input.

First, the problem only happens with Windows XP.

Second, it only effects port 80 (web traffic). You can
use telnet (port 23) and ping web-sites, but not browse
them.

Third, it happens on computers that are free of viruses
and spyware.

Fourth, if you release and renew your IP (reboot your
modem, computer, or "repair" your connection) browsing
returns for a while.

Fifth, if you start your computer in safe mode with
networking enabled, it never exhibits this problem.

Sixth, I've tried my Win2k laptop on the same connection
w/o any problems.

Seventh, it's not a network card or modem driver issue.

Eighth, it's not just IE. Netscape and Mozilla have the
same problem.

Lastly, if you get into your "services" in "administrative
tools" from the control panel and restart certain
services, browsing returns (again, for a while).

Because safe mode, which doesn't load all of the normal
services, works and restarting certain services helps, I
believe it is a problem with one of Microsoft XP's
services.

That's about all I've figured out so far. I really wish
someone at Microsoft would help out on this one. I've got
a few customers who are getting mighty upset (and not just
at me!)

Open the Internet Options applet in Control Panel
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" on the Advanced tab.
You may also have to set the Home Page to about:blank

Then eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
