No user accounts appearing on my welcome screen - can't log in

Hi all,

I have windows xp sp2 installed on my home computer. Last night I shut down
fine. I went to log on this evening and I got the normal welcome screen. I
typed in my password and it started to log in but was taking forever. After
five minutes it appeared that I was locked so I did a soft reboot.

When the welcome screen came back up there were no user accounts on the
screen. I have the admin account and tow others. The mouse works fine and I
could shut down fine with the "turn off" button. I shut down normally and
rebooted several times and still no accounts. I let is sit for 15 min or so
and none appeared. The hard drive cycles a little but no luck.

I tried booting in safe mode. I got into safe mode but I still end up on
the welcome screen with no accounts and cannot log in.

I tried putting the windows xp cd in and booting from it. I go to the
repair section and select the only windows install on there and it ask for
the admin password. I type it in and it says that password is wrong.

I hate reinstalling windows as I have to refigure out all the drivers and
stuff for my motherboard, sound, and other stuff ... not to mention all the
software.

Any help here would be great.

Sorry, one other thing I forgot. I hit ctrl alt del while on the welcome
screen and i get the alternate log in. The one that has user and password.
The account name was filled in correctly but it would not recognize my
password. I tried manually typing in the other user names and passwords and
they were not recognized either.

Ok, there´s some Security update by microsoft which you have not installed,
im sure. And because of that someone has been able to change the password.
Try installing windows on another hd, and put that old windows as a "slave"
disk and BROWSE the old windows to find and delete the password,
or get ALL microsoft security updates once you have installed the new
windows, and copy them to the old harddrive, and install them there.

Thanks Petri,

I use automatic updates and do the installations right away. Is there
somewhere I can go to grab the security updates that might now be done by the
auto function?

When I did my logon the first time right before windows xp hung there did
not seem to be a problem with the password. I was afraid that doing the warm
boot while the computer was hung in the process of logging on may have
somehow corrupted the user accounts.
