Can't shut off welcome screen

In XP Home I never used to have a welcome screen until I installed NET
Passport. I'm the only user on the computer so don't need a welcome screen.
How do I shut it off? The useless Windows Help suggests clearing the Use
Welcome Screen check box in User Accounts control panel. I don't see that
check box.
Someone said to type "control userpasswords2" in the Run command. I did that
and found a Use Password checkbox there. When I unchecked it now the Welcome
screen still comes up but it shows Administrator and says "Unable to log you
on due to an account restriction". I have to type my user name in ( I don't
have a password set) and select OK.

Uninstalling Net Passport didn't help either. Good grief Microsoft, it
should be a simple process.

Start ~ Run ~ Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called
'NoWelcomeScreen' and edit the value according to the settings (0 = default,
1 = hide). Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows
for the change to take effect.

Note: Users can still display the welcome screen by selecting it on the
Start menu or by typing "Welcome" in the
Run dialog box.

The reason for your current situation is that when you ran
control userpasswords2 you left Administrator entered in the
"Automatically Log On" box. You should have changed it to your
user account. You get the error message because the
Administrator account can only be accessed in Safe Mode on a
computer running XP Home Edition.

Here are a couple of options you can try to fix the problem.

1. Download and install TweakUI from Microsoft. TweakUI is
available here.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Direct Download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once the program is installed, go to Start -> All Programs ->
Powertoys for Windows XP -> TweakUI.
Click the + sign next to Logon in the left hand column.
Click on Autologon.
In the right hand pane, put a check mark in the box next to
"Logon automatically at system startup".
Enter the name of your user account in the User Name box.
Hit the Set Password button and enter your password twice.
Note: You should skip this step if your account has a blank
password.
Click OK to close TweakUI.
Restart your computer to see if you get the desired results.

2. Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
Put the check mark back in the box next to "User must enter a
user name and password to user this computer".
In the "Users for this computer" box, click on the account you
want to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name. Don't leave it set to
Administrator.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

FYI, there's an update for the .NET framework which sometimes
fixes this problem.

The Welcome to Windows screen appears when you start Windows XP
after you install the .NET Framework 1.1

Should you decide to reinstall the .NET Framework, you should
go to Windows Update and check for updates.

Good luck

Far out. I went back into control userpasswords2 and set the Automatic Log
On box as you suggested. Now the computer comes up without a welcome screen
as I wanted.

Thanks for the help.
