no sound popup

My mates Medion pc mt5 running xp home has a sound fault?
It is 2nd hand with no documentation.

Plug in a small set of active speakers in the sound out plug
and he gets a popup stating;

"there are headphones plugged in the front panel. Until they
are disconnected you will get no sound".

Of course there are no headphones, socket or any lead from
the mobo to any socket.

Can anyone point me in the required direction please?
Model Medion pc MT5 xp home.

Could it be a faulty switch in the appropriate jack socket?

thanks,
Mick L

Are you sure the 'sound out' jack isn't the headphone jack? On any computer
I've had, the front panel jack was for headphones. Or are you plugging the
speakers into a jack on the back? What sound card is built in to this PC? A
lot of them have the jacks software-configurable. Maybe you software is
confused? :)
