Hi,

This is an XP-native Sony Notebook computer, still running XP. It's a Vaio,
the sticker says model PCG-7F1L, though that isn't the actual model number,
according to Sony. No system beep, no nothing. I've checked all the control
panels. Neither the onboard speakers or the sound out jack make any sound.

I downloaded and reinstalled the original sound driver. It seemed to install
okay.

What's likely wrong with this thing? What else might be done.

I'm doing this for a young college student with very little money. She's
sure be glad if it could be made to work.

Is it possible to swap in a second hand sound card, assuming the sound card
is dead?

Thanks,

Thug

It's a laptop... you are not likely to be able to just 'swap out components'
all that easily.

For models released before Summer 2000
The computer information and compliance label (located on the bottom of the
notebook case or the back of the desktop case) indicates the actual model /
product name.

For models released Fall 2000 and later
The model name can be found on a small label located in one of the following
places:

Notebook Computers:
- On the bezel (frame) of the LCD display.
- On the LCD hinge.
- At the top left or top right of the keyboard.

Desktop Computers:
- On the front of the computer.

You might replace it with something like an USB sound card or PCMCIA sound
device...

No because the sound is built into the motherboard,
Check Hardware Devices for any yellow exclamaition marks
You did install the driver from Sony site?
