no sound on new windows xp pc

I just had a custom system built and when it arrived
everything works but the audio. When you crank the
computer volumn and the speaker volumn you can just barely
hear any sounds. I've tried plugging the speakers into the
other inputs, installing the drivers, anything I can think
of. The pc has nvidia onboard audio integrated. The nvidia
soundstorm application seems to work fine, even shows
the "sound playing" on the sound meter, but again, you can
just barely make out any sound if you put your ear to the
speakers. No error messages, no icons alerting me to a
problem when I look at the drivers. I am one lost soul
here. Thanks for looking.

Are your speakers externally powered (meaning do they have a ac adapter that plugs into it and give it power)? Or are they internally powered (they don't have an ac adapter and receive their power from the motherboard through its connection)? If they are internally powered, they might not be getting enough power from the motherboard, thus they won't play music loud, even if you crank it to the max volume. I had this problem and I went to Wal-Mart and brought a cheap 2 speaker set that was externally powered.

No these speakers have their own amp and are externally
powered. Thanks.
