no sound of any kind

Rick

Hi,

I have recently done a clean install of Vista Enterprise on a HP a1250n
which uses a Micro-Star MS-7184 mother board. I have no sound of any kind.
I have downloaded and installed the correct Realtec AC'97 audio driver
(optained from HP). The sound is recognized and is working properly
according to Device Manager. I have uninstalled and reainstalled - nothing.
My local tech support suggested that I purchase a better sound card. I
purchased a Creative Blaster Audigy SE, downloaded the latest Vista drivers -
again nothing. Another thread suggested a USB sound card so I got one of
those - again nothing. My local tech support (University) says that I have
done everything possible so they have no ideas.
There are a couple of clues in the system behavior. If I right click on the
speaker in the system tray and choose sounds, then select a sound and choose
test, no sound but the CPU usage increases for a short time as if it is doing
something. If I choose the Recording tab, it hangs and must be killed with
task manager. If I choose the Playback tab, select the speaker icon, right
click and choose properties, then choose the advanced tab and select test - I
get an error message stating "Failed to play test tone".
I can't contact Microsoft because it would cost me close to $300 since this
is Enterprise addition. I would buy a new computer before spending that to
fix the old one. This discussion group is my last hope otherwise I'm going
to trash Vista and go back to XP.

Thanks

If you are not hearing any audio at all from your computer, click Start >
type Device Manager > open it > expand your 'Sound, video and game
controllers' from the devices tree, select your Audio device, right click it
from the contextual menu that appears, click 'Scan for hardware changes'

This should check for any new available drivers for the device that might
resolve your issue. You could also try uninstalling the device, restart the
system, let Windows redetect it and reinstall the driver.

Of course, make sure that your speakers are powered on, plugged in, and the
volume on the speakers is turned up.

Vista Enterprise customers should get support that comes as a part of their
Volume License contract.

-- Andre, thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I've done what you have
suggested dozens of times to now avail. I'm also sure my speakers are
working and I've also tried other speakers and headphones.

Rick,

Do you have the Volume icon set to show in the Notification area?
Is it set to MUTE by any strange chance?
OR
Maybe it is not showing, but got set to MUTE somehow.

Hi Andre,

Interesting thought. How do we make the jump from no sound to a bad video
card? However, it is a new video card that I bought for this upgrade to
Vista. However, the sound was working in XP with this new video card which
is an Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS. I suppose I could pull it out and try the
onboard video to see if the sound starts working.

Sorry - it was just an idea

Hi,

The speaker icon is not set to mute and the volume is set to 100%.

Thanks

Hi Andre,

Not the video card. I removed the new one and reverted to the onboard video
- still no sound.

When switching between onboard and sound card, did you plug speakers
into device you have enabled ?

It may be something you have already done but it is very easy to overlook,
so I wonder.

Have you set up your speakers as Default. There is a button over there in
the window Manage Audio Devices where you can set your device as default but
prior to that you should highlight your speakers.

If you missed that there will be NO SOUND.

After you set it as default, click configure and click Test. You should hear
a ding. Very loud.

Ok...Couple of things that you haven't mentioned nor have others. In your
BIOS, make sure the sound card is enabled. I know, but sometimes the small
stuff gets overlooked. Secondly, go here, and down load the driver for
whatever chipset that board uses...

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/

If you don't know what chipset it's using, go to...

http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=3&ps=UE&lang=en

Grab Everest Ultimate. After it loads, click on Computer in the tree on the
left, then on Summary. About a quarter of the way down in the info pane, you
will see Multimedia, and your chipset will be given there.

I have an Acer with the Realtek High Def. Audio Controller(Realtek ALC888),
and only run their drivers.

Hi,

Yes, I've always made sure that I have the speakers plugged into the correct
sound card.

Hi,

I don't remember if I specifically did this, but the output device in
question has always had a green check accross the speaker icon so I assume
that it was the default. Good idea though, I'll check on Monday (the problem
is on my office computer).

Thanks

Hi Andre,

I've tried three different sound cards. All behave exacly the same -
clearly not the sound card.
