No sound in Vista Media Center

G'day,
I just installed the Vista RC1 and I'm having issues with sound in the Media
Center. Sound in windows works fine, and I hear sounds when I traverse the
menu's in media center, but when I either go into the speaker set up option
and click test speakers, or when I try and watch tv, the sound doesn't
work... It produces a deep clicking noise.

I have an nForce 2 motherboard with the built-in sound, which I've read is
supported by vista.

Does the speaker test, or live TV use a different kind of sound format or
something? I have no idea whats going on. I've tried using the audio
drivers from MS and nVidia, didn't make any difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robbo,

I have ALMOST exactly the same problem. No clicking noise, just no sound
recordings. I get sound in live tv, in the menus and also in windows, but
not in my recordings.

Have you had any joy sorting it out? My soundcard is an onboard SoundMax
device on an ASUS motherboard. I've tried the drivers bundled with vista and
also the latest from the ASUS site but no luck yet.

And I have ALMOST exactly the same problem as you. Everything is fine
when I make a manual recording, i.e. press the record button in Live TV
- but there is no sound on recordings set up with the timer. This has
me completely puzzled :-(

That's interesting. I just tried it and mine is doing the same. I started a
recording just by pressing the red button and the sound is fine. What sound
device are you using?

I've tried updating my sound drivers with no joy so the only thing I can
think of is replacing the vista MPEG decoders (one must ship with it now cos
I haven't installed one) with a third party one like WinDVD or PowerDVD.
Have you tried this?

I'll try it later if I can find my serial number for WinDVD, I seem to have
lost it. Failing that I'm going to have to go back to XP until at least RC2
cos it's doing my head in.)

I have a C-Media 9880 onboard sound system. There are no Vista drivers
available for this yet, so I'm using the original sound drivers from my
XP system in XP compatibility mode and this setup works well, apart from
this one problem.

I've not tried it yet but I will be shortly as I'm not able to play
standard .AVI files although I installed the DivX drivers and that works
OK.

Keep us posted with any progress you make - I'll do likewise.

I did the upgrade from RC1 to RC2 build 5744 and this has completely
cured the problem. I've tested with five timed recordings so far and
they all recorded perfectly complete with sound.

The upgrade also cured my inability to play .AVI files so that's the end
of the problems I've noticed here with Vista.

I hope you have similar success.
