KatyDee,
First the obvious, which I am sure you have already thought of and checked:
Is the volume knob on the speaker(s) turned up? It's usually located on one
of the speakers and controls the volume for all the speakers. I have a
surround sound system and the main speaker volume knob is on my front, right
channel speaker.
Have you opened the Mixer Control Panel and checked to see if the PC Speaker
Mute Box is checked? Go to Start>All
Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control. When that opens you will
see panels with various functions you can enable or disable. Look for the
panel that identifies the PC Speaker. If you don't see it, go up to Options
and click Properties. It may need to be checked to show up. It could be
muted and that may be why you don't hear anything.
Now the not so obvious, but also not so probable: The sound card, or lack
thereof. Your sound could be provided by a sound card like the Creative
SoundBlaster series or it could be what is called "onboard sound" or a chip
that is hardwired on the motherboard. Open the Control Panel by going to
Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. Your sound card or chip will
be shown there.
Post back with your adventures. Good luck!

I have just finished setting up my computer and no matter what I do I am
getting no sound from any program. Is it possible that a brand new and good
computer would be sold without a sound card? And how do I get the computer
and/or windows to recognize the attached speakers? I know that the speakers
work because you can hear them humming and I am pretty sure they are hooked
up right in the back of the tower but nothing happens when I am on the
Internet or try to play a CD. Any suggestions?
