NO SOUND DEVICE??

Now, I just did a clean install of Windows XP--I then uploaded all the
updates from Microsoft Update...apparently Realtek was part of the updates
from the microsoft site. Microsoft told me it was downloaded properly, but
there is no sound.

I unistalled it, so I could reinstall and then attempted to download Realtek
AC97 Audio Driver from their official site and during setup I get two error
messages: "unable to launch setcdfmt.exe"and "alcxwdm.cat.not found!"

I am not sure what to do next??

NEVER download a hardware driver from Windows Update.

WHOSE official site? Realtek's?

If so... are you sure you got the correct version?

Are you sure the Realtek update was related to audio and not network.
Are you sure the audio driver is installed at all.

The above error seems like a damaged install package. Try downloading it
again and make sure you get the right package (reguar AC'97 or HD Audio).
And check if the soundchip is in fact Realtek.

I am quite sure I downloaded the right package--what about the soundchip? I
thought it was one in the same?

Also, I downloaded SRS Sandbox--should I uninstall that too, then try to
install Realtek?

"Are you sure the Realtek update was related to audio and not network.

I'm almost positive...I'm not completely. I'll check again to see if the
driver is installed...it says it's not.

BTW, does it have to be a RealTek Audio Driver? Can you recommend anything
else?

I don't think it's the download package--I've downloaded it twice to no luck.

The first action to take after a basic WIndows install isn't Windows
Updates, it's installing the motherboard chipset drivers. These will be
on a CD that came with your system. Until you install these, various bits
of hardware won't work.

You can also find these at the motherboard manufacturer's support site.
Take the motherboard model to that site - it's screened on the motherboard.
If the system is a laptop, look on the bottom for the exact model number.
