No sound at all from windowsXP SP3

I'm using WinXP professional SP3 and have suddenly lost all sound, even
music CD's wont produce sounds. (If I boot into Linux on another disk
then the sound is working so the hardware is ok.)
If I go into ControlPanel\SoundsAndAudioDevices The "volume" section
says No Audio Device. The "Audio/SoundPlayback" section says
DefaultDevice-No Playback Devices, and is grayed out so I can't select
one. The "Hardware" section shows my device 'RealTek AC'97" and under
device properties says that the device is working properly. However the
Apply button is grayed out so that I can't select it.
Anyone got any idea how to fix it.

Download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturers' support web
page.

I've tried that, still not working. Device manager shows no problems or
conflicts with the driver.
