Installed MS antispyware software on a Dell computer with
a SBC DSL service. At the time I was running EZ Antivirus
from CA and Zone Alarm. Program reported many faults.
Fixed them all. Rebooted. Anything that came up to block
I did. Made connection with my SBC DSL. Opened IE only to
get the "page not found" screen. Tried to get my email
with OE. Would not connect. Contacted SBC DSL. Tech tried
several things and said I had to call Dell because
something was wrong with the TCIP driver. Did not call
Dell yet. Restored computer to last week date, WindowsXP
Home. No help. Restored back to current day. No help. Ran
ipconfig. Reported back with no entry in "conection -
specific DNS Suffix". In the IP Address entry was
169.254.144.11.
Not sure what to do next. Will call Dell.
Peace,

Your situation sounds like what happened to me when I
upgraded to SP2. Are you running with SP2? If you are,
go into Security Center under Control Panel and look to
see if ZA is your firewall or if Microsoft's firewall is
running. When I upgraded to SP2, Microsoft's firewall
settings wouldn't let me connect. I had to play around
with the settings (between MS's firewall and ZA) before I
got to a happy medium. Also, what version of ZA are you
running? If its not the latest version, go and download
the latest version.

Peter - you might try a couple more things:

1) I don't think this is your issue, but it might be worth trying:

at a command prompt, type

netsh winsock reset

and hit enter
restart the machine.

2) If that doesn't do the job, resetting TCP/IP might be the next
thing--this is easy to do--heres a long kb article that describes it--the
actual command is very similar to 1) above, but they describe it in great
detail:

Hello all.
Well I tried all suggestions over the last couple of weekends. Called Dell
and the solution was to back up the data and call them back for a new OS
install. I can do both so I did not call them back.
Today I spent several hours troubleshooting. Nothing was working. I checked
my CA EZ Antivirus. All real-time protection was disabled. I enabled all
real time protection. I connected to SBC and started IE. Walla! problem
solved. I could view web pages again. I was not getting the EZ Antivirus
icon in the tool bar window. A EZ Antivirus KB article mentioned that the
install might be corrupt. I uninstalled EZ, MS antivirus, and left Zone
Alarm. Rebooted and tried to reinstall EZ. Before the install could complete
it demanded to update the data files. Well back to the original problem. I
could not receive pages even though I was connected to SBC. I restored the
system to earlier in the day. Then I could access pages. I disabled EZ real
time protection and was unable to view pages again. Enabled EZ and page view
was okay. Crazy part this time is in the EZ antivirus settings, all real
time protection is enabled. Checking the state of real time protection and
it shows all disabled.
Sorry for the long post. Just a crazy thing. I think I am just going to do a
format and install WindowsXP.

That's a wierd set of symptoms. It all seems to boil down to some issue
with the EZ Trust Antivirus, which I've had very little trouble with.

Hi Bill
Yes, your are right. I am going to mess around some more before I do a
reinstall. This actually is my Father-in-laws computer. I bought it home
yesterday. He has DSL SBC. I have cable RR. It will be interesting to see
how it acts on my home network.
