After cleanup of disk F: I defragmented and the free area is 35%. Yet
Quicken tells me that the disk is full when I try to backup on it. Is this
an XP Home issue or a Quicken issue?

What version of Quicken are you using?? If the version compatible with XP?
Does it know how to read NTFS drives and understand large drives?

Y.

Whatever it did it did alright until I defragmented.
There was no problem operation with any of the daily operation of Quicken
since I moved to XP weeks ago.
I defragmented D: as well. They are both FAT32 and D: does not generate the
same msg.
It is not a large drive it is a partition of a 40MB drive on which E: also
occupies a 10MB FAT32 partition on which there is no problem writing, and C:
a 20MB NTFS partition on which there is no problem writing either.

Strangely enough another disk has D: and G: both FAT32 10MB and D accepts
writing and G: gives the same "disk full" when the disk is actually 98%
free.
