defragment question

I have an XP SP2 PC that has a 10 GB HDD. It only has about 1.38 GB of free
space remaining on it after I do a disk cleanup. The drive needs to be
defragmented, but when I run defragment, it goes thru and says that the
defragment is complete, but the graph appears to have remained unchanged
(almost all red!) and it gives me a log full of files that were not able to
be defragmented. Is there a certain amount of free space that is needed to
defragment this drive, and why are so many files saying that they cannot be
defragmented? Thanks for any suggestions!

Yes. 15%. Check Help; it's all there. You barely have room for windows to
run after it creates a couple of temp files. You're in bad need of a bigger
drive.
