Installing Quicken 2008 after Quicken 2005

R

Rascal

I have already invested in 5 rounds of email question/response w/ Intuit on
this - they have given up and have sent me to their phone support line. So, I
know that I am doomed to suffer an intermitable amount of time on the phone
with them. But before I submit to that, I was hoping to get some
insight/ideas on how to diagnose my problem from folks on this site.

My issue is that, after several years of using a number of versions of
Quicken - up to Quicken 2005 - they are now forcing me to upgrade to 2008 or
lose the ability to download data from financial institutions. I'm ok with
that - but the problem is that Q2008 won't install and I am quite anxious
about losing 15 years of data that is sitting in a proprietary file (it is
backed up of course...)

The symptom after trying many, many different things is always the same. the
setup program starts, I see files being extracted, there is a pause for a few
seconds and then I get the 'Microsoft has encountered an error and needs to
close' message.

I've tried all these things below, all with the same result:
- install 2008
- uninstall 2005 and install 2008
- run quicken cleanup program (I'm not convinced that it downloaded properly
or ran properly) and install 2008
- run quicken cleanup program and Microsoft Installer Clean Up Utility
(Quicken does not show up as a choice in selecting what to clean up) and
install 2008
- change name of quicken qw.exe to something else - this was a no-go as
there are no quicken files to change - I see messages that extracting but I
don't see any place that they have extracted to - the file is not found on a
file search
- install 2008 from a newly created account on the pc.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on or at least something that I
can do to further diagnose the problem?

as always, thanks in advance for you consideration

I just upgraded from 2006 to quicken 2008 and had to use the
clean-up tool from the quicken site. Look for "qcleanui.exe" and try
that. Make sure you select all previous versions of quicken to remove.

Just a thought: Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any
files are damaged or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to
reboot afterwards so damaged files will be replaced.

I have quicken 2007 and have no problems with connecting to various financial
institutions, I have no idea what your talking about by (being forced to
upgrade)?

Apparently Intuit will only support (including maintaining the ability to
download data from financial institutions) prior versions for 3 years - and
time is up for Quicken 2005. I was well informed of this fact. Upgrade or you
are on your own. You have a few years to go...

I do think that this is the root of my problem - the version of qcleanui.exe
did not download cleanly and I ran it but I do not believe that it executed
properly. So I'm hoping to get some other info on how to diagnose the problem.

My own choice, I don't like upgrades, or, installing newer versions over
older ones. In the past, I backed up (as usual) the default quicken data
selection to 3 different type removable media. Uninstalled Quicken, then,
removed any remnants I could find, rebooted, and installed the newer
version. Then, restored from the backup. If you have any archived quicken
data saved year to year, don't lose that either.

As usual, keep an image copy of your windows partition as insurance.

You repeatedly say that you think you had a problem downloading and
running the Quicken cleanup tool. Have you tried downloading it again?
Did you notice that in its inscrutable wisdom, Intuit requires you to
download *two* separate exe files to run this "tool"?

Done - still get same result - but thanks for the thought, didn't know this
utility existed.

I migrated from Q2002, 2004 and 2005 to Q2008 on the same machine
without any issues. Most accounting firms have 2002 through 2008
installed in different directories on the SAME computer with their data
in different folders based on version.

I lost my 2002 disk and needed to reinstall, 2008 was painless.

I suggest that you've got a problem with your computer, some basic
windows systems/config.

Try installing it on a different PC, a clean PC, and them copy your data
to that machine and then migrate to 2008.

You are right, Lem - and I proved in by successfully installing on another
pc that never had quicken.

I would still like very much to get to the bottom of this problem if I can,
as this is the computer from which $$ is normally handled.

thank you, Lem, for being gentle in your stating of the obvious. I did know
that there were two executables - and with the link that you gave me, for
some reason, I feel much more comfortable with the download that I got rather
than the link sent to be by the quicken email support. It downloaded w/ the
proper names. When I ran it I got the same reason and before. When I try
again to install I get the same result (failure in setup.exe event type BEX)
- and I mentioned elsewhere it is not the quicken 2008 download as that
installed successfully on a computer that never had quicken.

and now I'm off to the quicken forum - you are right, that is a better idea
than the phone line.

Just wanted to post back the solution...I'm embarassed to say that, after
trying more things over and over than I can count...and lots of time w/
Quicken support...and doing all the things suggested here...I finally did the
obvious and ran a full scan w/ Norton....

the Vundo B trojan! fixed it and the install went fine.

When will I ever learn! (don't answer that)

and thanks to all that tried to help.
