I am having network problems with MS XP running on a HP
Pavilion. When going to Network Services and selecting
properties all I have is a General Tab and nothing else.
There is no Protocol Tab. My question is how do I add the
Protocol Tab so I can enable TCP/IP?

Protocol Tab so I can enable TCP/IP?

TCP/IP should be installed by default, and there should be no need to
add it. Right-click your network connection and click Properties.
Does TCP/IP appear under "This connection uses the following items:"?

If it does, go to a command prompt, type "ipconfig /all", and verify
that the TCP/IP properties for the desired network connection appear.

Resetting TCP/IP might help. Follow the steps in this Microsoft
Knowledge Base article:

How to Reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q299357

If that doesn't solve the problem, follow these steps, taken from
Microsoft Knowledge Base article 811259:

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network
connection, and click Properties.

4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.

5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click
OK.

6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.

7. Reboot.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Network Services". How did you get to
that screen?

Thanks for the reply, but when I click on properties for
the network connection, I have 2 tabs- "General", and
"Authentication". Under the General Tab it displays the
device using window and a "Configure" button underneath it.
The is no display of "This connection uses the following
items:" under either tab.

- I don't have
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services"
registry keys. I had deleted winsock and winsock2 keys per
another post.

- When I did ipconfig /all here is what received :
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

C:\Documents and Settings\Dad>ipconfig /all

- Also by-the-way when I create network connections they
always switch to bridged. I have a small home network - 2
desktops and laptop using connected via a Belking router to
a cable modem. Not sure if that is pertinent but thought I
would roll that in here as well.

Thanks - Hal
