why I can't open shared folders in xp from win98?

My home network has 4 PCs: 2 win XP, that don't have any problem for sharing
files and folders, 1 with ME and 1 with 98, that can see all the PCs in the
network but can't open shared folders in XP, just printers. I tried
disabling xp firewalls but didn't work, so I think the problem is windows....

This is all what I found at network properties in win me/98:

Configuration:
==========
*client: Client for MS networks: start session and restore network connections
*service: Share printers and files for MS networks: LM Ad:yes, main explore:
enabled
*device: Infrared port for IBM
*device: Telephon access adapter
*device: xircom Ethernet Network
*protocol: IRDA for infrared port
*protocol: TCP/IP for telephon access adapter
*protocol: TCP/IP for xircom ethernet network

Main sesion starting: client for ms networks
printers and files sharing: allow file access, allow printing with my printers

Identification:
============
PC Name: IBM (or toshiba, we have 2 troubling PCs)
Workgroup: Home (the right workgroup)

Access Control:
===========
resorurces Access control

What can be the problem?
Thanks

Please reply to this message in the news group (not by E-mail) with
more information to help other people understand the problem:

1. How are you trying to open XP's shared folders from Win Me and 98?

2. What exactly happens when you do it? If there's an error message,
what does it say?

3. Which version of XP do you have -- Home or Professional?

4. If Professional, is simple file sharing enabled or disabled?

OK, Steve, this is the information:
1. How are you trying to open XP's shared folders from Win Me and 98?

A: On win 98/ME: Clicking on network->see all the network->home (this is a
network icon and when clicking on it, all computers in the net appear)
2. What exactly happens when you do it? If there's an error message,
what does it say?

A: No error happens, just shared folders don't appear. Only shared printers.
3. Which version of XP do you have -- Home or Professional?
A: Home in 2 computers, and as I said ME in one and 98 in another one
4. If Professional, is simple file sharing enabled or disabled?
A: Doesn't apply, but I used in my XP home the network wizard and enabled
file sharing

Thanks for your help,
Regards, Manuel S.

The problem most likely isnt your Network settings, its probably your
partitions, see if you can access the win98/me systems from the XP, if you
can check to see if the XP is using NTFS, if it is you wont be able to
access it from the 98/me systems as 98/me have no support for NTFS
partitions.

This is not correct. All versions of Windows can access XP's NTFS
partitions over the network.

98 and Me can't access an NTFS partition on their own local hard
disks. This restriction has nothing to do with networking.
