I haven't had any problems with SP2 ...come to that I can't remember having
a problem with a service pack for any Windows platform EVER, ...past and
present, (excluding ME - rarely ever worked on machines with that in'em).
....yesterday, and day b4, had to download W2k 4 floppy boot up from
bootdisk.com - friend had tried to upgrade W2k over W98se and it failed half
way through, dirt on cd-rom disk ....
....anyway today before he picked it up I installed SP4, 129mb's or so, into
it and that was all fine. ...well it knocked his sound driver for six!
...left a little yellow circle with a black exclamation mark in device
maanger / hardware but, after "upgrading" the driver to the W2k ones, all
was fine again.
I did a few other odds and ends - merged his c: and d: drives, converted
them all c: e: f: g: h: to NTFS .. (special thanx to David H. Lipman in
W2k general NG ....i always seem to post when I'm half afraid to do
something!), ....
....anyway, the owner collected it tonight, was very pleased.
During the several happy hours I spent on that machine I was astonished at
the overall speed. Asus P2B, (just like I used to have a long time
ago...tho PII 350 was in mine), with PIII 450mhz SECC was it ...or "Slot 1"
or something like that, 192mb 168pin SDRAM ...I wonder if that SDRAM was
working at 66mhz or 100mhz ?...can't remember now. IDE ribbons were 40 core
so data's obviously trundling along the IDE ribbon at 33mhz ...that you can
tell without removing the cover but, otherwise it's quite responsive. I can
remember putting that box together - it was all old at the time cpu was £10
mobo was £15
....and he's still using Autocad on it.
....why did I spend all that I've spent on mine ? Mind u ...I suppose if I
tried to do half the things that I do on mine, on his, it would choke, or
croak ! ..having said that, it's still "up" to the work that he's doing on
it - and as I said it was quite "pleasantly" responsive.
regards, Richard
