No MSCONFIG - Can this be re-installed?

Hi,

When I enter MSCONFIG into Run, I get the message 'Windows cannot find
'msconfig'. Make sure you type the name correctly and then try again. To
search for a file, click the Start button and then click Search.

Is there anyway to get MSCONFIG back again?

Greg.

Are you using an administrator account? If not, do so and see if MSCONFIG
appears.

Hi,

Yes I am using an administrator account and get the error message previously
posted when entering this into Run.

Hi Greg Matthews,

What happens when you type:

msconfig.exe

or

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

Also, do the following commands work in the Run dialog box:

regedit
cmd

Hi William,

Same error as before when typing in msconfig.exe, however I can view
msconfig using C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe.
Both commands work as I would expect in the Run dialog box.

Is there any reason you can think of why just entering msconfig would not
work yet C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe does seem to?

Greg.

Open the registry and navigate to the following location:

"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE"

Is "C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe" listed as the
correct path?

Also, open a command prompt and type:

set > "%userprofile%\desktop\set.txt"

A file called set.txt should be on your desktop, can you copy the
contents of the file and post back with results?

Hi Greg Matthews,

Please download the following Registration file from my website to fix
the missing MSCONFIG entry in the registry to your desktop.

http://www.lprf.ca/files/temp/msconfig.reg

Right-click "msconfig.reg" to select Merge. This will merge the
contents of the registration file with the Windows registry. You may
view the contents of "msconfig.reg" by right-clicking "msconfig.reg" to
select edit.

When the file has been successfully merged then you *may* need to
_reboot_ your computer for the applied changes to your system.

If this procedure *does* not work then I will post on how to repair the
Help Center for Windows XP which includes the msconfig tool.

William,

Thanks for this, it worked perfectly, msconfig can now be accessed using
Run.

Appreciate all your help with this today.

Greg.

Your Path Statement is probably screwed up, and lacking the normal
entries for WinXP's system folders. Therefoe, WinXP doesn't know how to
find the applications.

It should look something like this:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

To edit the Path, right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced >
Environmental Variables. In the System Variables windows, highlight
"Path" and click the <Edit> button.
