No matter how many items I delete, PST file size will not reduce any

I have a PST file that's a littler over 2 GB, and when I try to reduce the size by deleting unneeded emails, it doesn't change the file size. When I right click Personal folders (the only top level directory) it shows 870 MB which is drastically smaller (due to my deleting many emails.)


What's the deal with this? Hope someone can enlighten me a little.

Note: This was an Outlook 2003 PST and now is being used in Outlook 2007
