No longer recognising devices

After replacing a damaged PCI card, when I plugged my external hard drive and
card reader back in they were no longer recognised. This is also the case for
my microsoft intelipoint laser mouse. I have tried swapping back to the old
card and also plugging in to different ports but it would appear that the
registry for these sort of devices no longer exists. Even the driver CDs that
came with the items are not recognised All the first year of my
Granddaughter's life is on the hard drive although I feel certain they are
safe. It would appear that it is all mass storage devices that it will not
recognise. Anyone know how to sort this? PS I have tried a simple system
restore. Nothing!!!! Thanks
