SP3 won't recognise my joystick

I've an old Logitech Wingman Force 3D,and up until a couple of months ago it
was working fine Since SP3 was installed,it doesn't recognise it,and
unplugging replugging in any of the USB ports has no effect.I contacted
Logitech support, and they suggested I remove and reinstall SP3,which I
did....nearly breaking my system in the process, but that's another
story.....After SP3 was removed the joystick was immediately recognised. After
SP3 was reinstalled,I was back to square one.All my other USB devices seem to
work ok,and I have the latest joystick drivers installed.Logitech seem unable
to help me any further, although they did suggest a clean reboot and reinstall
their drivers then, but I suspected that was clutching at straws, and that
proved to be correct..it had no effect.
Ironically, when I plug it into my Vista machine,it is recognised fine[albeit
with no force feedback active....anybody got any ideas how to solve that
would be handy too?].
I was wondering why SP3 has decided not to like my joystick?Could the
joystick firmware no longer be any good, after all it is several years old?Can
anybody please suggest a fix,or do I risk getting a more modern one that SP3
still might not like? [The usual USB problem solving doesn't work]

Have you tried deleting SP3 then the joystick driver, then reinstall SP3
followed by the joystick driver?
IE; install the joystick after SP3 with no previous indications of a
joystick. .
