usb memory sticks

I'm operating on xp pro and use skymedi memory stick to transfer information
from home to work system which has always worked until now. I now plug in the
same stick and the message "device not recognised" appears I have tried all
usb ports on my system - scanner works in all ports - stick doesn't. stick
works on laptop and a second stick that I have also works on laptop but gives
same message when plugged into desktop ports - have checked for updated
drivers but none available it just seems that for some reason my desktop no
longer recognises my memory sticks - does anybody have any advice
